GIF compressor

Shrink animated GIFs while they still look the same, or squeeze them under an exact size like 256 KB or 10 MB. Every result is measured against your original. Runs in your browser.

How it makes GIFs smaller

A GIF stores up to 256 colours and compresses runs of identical pixels. Most GIFs waste space in three places: a palette rebuilt for every frame (which also makes colours flicker), dithering noise that never repeats, and pixels re-sent even though they didn’t change. The compressor builds one palette for the whole animation, dithers with a temporal lock so still areas stay identical from frame to frame, and sends only what changed. Then it searches for the smallest version that still passes your quality guard.

Two ways to compress

  • Smallest that looks the same: pick a quality guard and get the smallest GIF above it.
  • Under a size: type a limit and get the best-looking GIF that fits. Useful for Discord (256 KB emoji), email or upload forms.

Questions

How do I compress a GIF without losing quality?

Use "Smallest that looks the same". The compressor tries fewer colours, gentler dithering and reusing pixels that didn’t change between frames, measures every try against your original, and keeps the smallest one above the quality guard. If your GIF was already smaller, you get it back unchanged.

How do I get a GIF under a specific size, like 256 KB or 10 MB?

Choose "Under a size" and type the limit in KB. You get the best-looking GIF that fits. If even the smallest version is too big, make it narrower with the Width box too.

Is this safe? Are my GIFs uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. The GIF is processed by your own browser, so private files stay on your device. There’s no account, no watermark and no file size cap.

What does the dB number mean?

It measures how close the result is to your original across every frame (PSNR). Above about 38 dB differences are very hard to see; around 30 dB you may notice grain or banding when you look closely.

Why does my GIF still look grainy?

GIF can only show 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients and video clips get dithered. Converting to APNG keeps more colour, or reduce the size with the Width box instead of the colours.
